The latest phase of the drawology project, tracing drawology, is underway. The aim is to develop the research undertaken in the previous three drawology phases. This stage is being facilitated and supported by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP), who have offered us access to various spaces within the park. The project is being curated/developed by humhyphenhum (Deborah Harty & Phil Sawdon). The hums are engaging in meaningful play within sites at YSP in order to determine the direction of this iteration of drawology, which sits within Deborah Harty's research project drawing is phenomenology? In this sense tracing drawology is a speculative project without a defined end. However, it will attempt to extend the research undertaken during Performing Drawology, which used the Bonington Gallery space as the surface on which to draw, in an attempt to make the process of drawing explicit. tracing drawology will seek to extend this approach by considering how the drawing is affected when the space [surface] is extended by integrating and investigating aspects of the virtual. This phase represent the hums prospecting in the Chapel.
What a fascinating evolution of the drawology project—tracing as a performative and phenomenological act really deepens the dialogue between space, surface, and the self. Exploring drawing within the expanded, almost sacred context of the Chapel at YSP adds a profound dimension. For those working on experimental or site-specific drawing practices, tools like WhiteScreenVIP can become essential. It offers a whitescreen surface that acts as a virtual lightbox—perfect for tracing, layering digital forms, or even playing with light in live drawing installations. A minimal yet powerful aid in merging the tactile and the virtual within drawing research.
